This is my understanding of what consciousness is and what I can say about it with absolute certainty when it’s applicable to my fictional world only.

Consciousness is the ability of an individual to be aware of its own existence.

The most basic thing a conscious being is supposed to be able to do is say to itself, “I am.” By ‘say’ I don’t mean using their mouth to speak and then ears to listen. By ‘say’ I mean ‘think’.

In my opinion consciousness is best defined when it is considered as a separate entity from our physical self. As a matter of fact I have a belief system called the three aspects of existence. In it I talk about how our identity is made out of three things: our physical body (the internal organs and external appearance), our personality (the identity that we develop with living experiences and memories) and third is our soul, (the conscious internal clock that keeps on repeating, “I am.”)

Consciousness is what makes present possible. Think about it. Without your mind locating yourself in a present, there is no past or future to your existence. It will simply be a meaningless fictional story.

“My name is Ramsey Cranston. I am eighteen years old. I want to enroll into the army because as a child I adored my father who was a decorated soldier. He was my idol. I want to be exactly like him.”

We all of have a subjective view of the world. Humans experience everything around them with their five senses. These five are the strong physical senses but there is a sixth one, the consciousness.

The presence of these five senses has led to a belief system in mortals that ‘consciousness is born with one’s birth and it dies with one’s death’. That’s not true. Actually with addition of physical senses, that one true sense, consciousness, is suppressed to such an extent that they are aware of existence of their mortal self only. The ability of consciousness in its full potential makes a being aware of everything; all of time, space and information that makes up the universe.

I think therefore I am.
