That One Blurry Memory

A man named Arav is resting on a bed in his shrink’s residence. His eyes are shut but is fully conscious as he speaks,

“I don’t know why doc… I don’t know why for the last one week, every night, I have been getting this same recurring dream…”

“Every time I go to sleep I find myself in a strange blurry scene. It’s night time, I’m outside my house, there is grass under me, a white lamp in front and it’s raining heavily with a lot of lightning and thunder…”

Arav Silhi, the man on the bed, is a 45 years old politically powerful man. He does not have any designated post per say, but he is believed to be more powerful than the Prime Minister of the country, Payeria United. Irrespective of which party gets to win the election it is Arav who decides who gets what. Yes, he is that powerful. Also, he has reached this position at a surprisingly young age without any strong political background to begin with.

According to him everything about his life is perfect, perhaps too perfect, except for this one problem. This is the reason why Arav is at his psychiatrist’s place, as he said earlier, he is getting this one recurring dream.

He desperately wants to understand it. Which is why this is his seventh session in the last five days. Even the doctor is now annoyed conducting yet another session at 3 a.m.

DOCTOR: What do you want from me?

ARAV: I want you to help me understand this dream.

DOCTOR: What dream?

ARAV: The recurring one… night – grass – lamp – rain… Didn’t I tell you this before?

DOCTOR: How do you know that is a dream?

ARAV: What do you mean?

The doctor’s voice suddenly becomes heavy as he leans forward to speak in a scarry echoing tone.

DOCTOR: How do you know that is a dream and this is not?

ARAV: What are you saying? This is not a dream. You, me, this life… I know for sure this is real.

The voice of the doctor starts to echo as if the god is speaking through him.

DOCTOR: No! You are wrong. This one is the dream. I know you know it. Still you will never embrace the truth until you completely wake out of it. So… Wake up! Wake up!!

Arav is confused. Suddenly his world starts to spin making him dizzy. His eyes are shut but then he opens them hearing a loud thunder.

Arav is shocked to find himself back in the same dream scene. But for the first time that blurry picture is now clear. For the first time he feels the weight of his paralyzed body, the wetness of his bloody face and the pain he gets with every breath.

Arav is unable to move, the pain is excrutiating. He wants to scream to ask for help but unfortunately nobody will be able to hear him during this deafening rain. In this intense moment Arav hears these lines spoken in his psychiatrist’s divine voice,

“Oh my dear Arav Silhi, the aspiring politician,
You got yourself paralyzed from your own unlicensed gun,
You knew you were dying still “I want to live!” was your scream,
So I fulfilled this last wish of yours by letting you live a life in this one-quick-long dream.”
