This is an article talking about the possibility or impossibility of the facts that make stars alive.
Let’s see if this is possible or not by raising arguments from both points of view:
What makes stars living?
- Change: Like every other living creature, even stars undergo change with passage of time. The size, color, chemical composition, everything changes.
- Different rules: If we change the rules like, considering larger timeline to understand their movement or consider that they communicate by gravitational force or electromagnetic waves. We can call them to be conscious. But this can’t be proven yet.
What makes stars not living?
- It’s a process: Process like erosion and corrosion too are ongoing in favorable environment, you can’t call them alive. What makes us believe that stars are alive is light produced due to nuclear fusion. It’s a process.
- Personification: Words used like birth/death in regarding stars are mere personifications, for our convenience. Even electric cables are referred to as live or dead.
- Purpose: Any creature that is alive, lives for a purpose. If no higher purpose like of us humans., at least they want to keep their species alive by reproducing. Stars do no such thing. Or do they?
- Not like us: Every creature that is alive on our planet is a carbon based life form. And for survival we need water. Even while searching for extra-terrestrial life we look for traces of water. Since stars don’t need water, they don’t fit in the definition of ‘Living creature’.
- Simplicity: Every creature with consciousness has a complex structure. Even plants which are least conscious are made up of C-H-O compounds. But sun’s (stars) composition as we know it is mostly Hydrogen, Helium and some traces of Carbon, Iron, etc.
- Level of conscience: Everything in this universe has a conscience which can be measured (just a theory) in terms of quantity. Higher the conscience, more the things we can do. We humans have maximum of it. Even a rock might have conscience, but it is so low that we might as well consider it not-living. Same applies to the stars.
My answer might indicate that I am biased to the belief that stars are not alive. But that’s not true. Any theory we come up with cannot be completely dis-proven. Even the one where you believe that stars are actually giant living creatures.
Consider this for a theory, (If you have studied human body):
‘Stars are simply the powerhouses (Mitochondria) of the cells which constitute to make one gigantic superior being. And that makes us those microscopic or much smaller organisms, like parasites, that thrive on the resources available in that being.’
